It’s that time of year again; winter is here and snow is threatening to fall and cause chaos. That is, if you are still in the UK. For many people, the thought of snow couldn’t be further from their minds as they begin to prepare for a Christmas abroad.
Christmas is celebrated almost everywhere in the world and each country/region/religion celebrates differently. This means it is important to learn all you can about the community in which you will be living so that you understand the way they celebrate, or why they don’t if that is the case. Of course, nowhere will stop you celebrating Christmas, but it might be that it is not encouraged or overly celebrated. It’s important that you bear in mind the culture you are in.
Depending on where you have moved to, or indeed are planning on moving to, you might find that you are celebrating Christmas on the beach or in the glorious sunshine of your garden with family and friends. Whatever the scenario, it’s important to come together at this time and give and receive well wishes, gifts and cards of thanks.
Christmas means different things to different people; however the underlying meaning is the same wherever you go. It can be daunting spending Christmas away from the UK, if you have always spent Christmas here, though it can also be a really good experience. In fact, many people decide to take a break abroad specifically for Christmas so that they can see how other cultures celebrate, as well as get some winter sun of course!
From all of us at the Overseas Guides Company we are wishing you a very Merry Christmas, wherever in the world you are – see you in the New Year!
