Unless you are moving abroad to retire, or you have a lot of money, or the property is just a holiday home, then it is likely that you will need to find employment in the new country. Many young families or couples moving abroad will have to look for work when they arrive, if they do not arrive with a secured job offer already in place.
If you are moving from the UK to another country within the EEA (European Economic Area) then you will be able to legally work in the country. You will however be required to register or sign up to work. In Portugal for example you must register and apply to get a fiscal number. This is so that your wages are deducted with the appropriate taxes. You must also apply for residency, as you may only stay in the country for three months without a residency permit. This is a general rule that applies to most EU countries, though may vary slightly. Be sure you know the rules and requirements for the place you are going, before you go there.
Turkey is particularly hard to find work in as they are not keen on employing non-nationals unless they are unable to find a Turk to do the job. The same goes for quite a few of the Caribbean countries, so it is best not to rely on finding work, or to have a secure job offer from an employer in the country before you move. Another advantage of having a job offer before your arrival is that the employer will be able to help you sort out your residency forms and applications and having a secure job offer will go in favour of your application.
Some countries require you to have a visa depending on the reasons for your stay in the country. New Zealand and Australia for example, you will need a visa which specifies that you are eligible to work in the country. New Zealand and Australia are hard to get working visas for. You have to complete a points test and only those who qualify will be eligible to work in the country. If you are on a student visa or working holiday visa, you may be able to find work, however you are only able to stay in the country for as long as your visa is valid.
If you have retired to a country, you may be able to continue to claim your UK pension from abroad. If you have been in the said country before you retire, and have contributed to the state, you may also be eligible to claim a pension from that country, however this will have to be checked.
